What on earth is randonneuring?

Long-distance, self-supported cycling with ties to the oldest cycling event still running: Paris-Brest-Paris (hence the french term – and the metric system).

Okay, but why?

Randonneuring is a big tent.  Riders range from tourist-speed mileage junkies to Race Across America (RAAM) top finishers. The common thread is an enjoyment of completing challenging events and exploring the world by bicycle.

Sounds great, how do I start?
